Hey there, sorry I’ve been kinda MIA lately. I’ve been working on some projects that I want to get released to everyone. The main one being a blog software project that you can use in the same way that you would use WordPress. I’ll not let you know the name just yet, as I haven’t secured it for myself, but we’ll just call it code name “rocking the net”, which I just thought of as I was typing this. Anyway, I’m hoping to have the first beta version ready for release within the next two months, hopefully even sooner. I’m looking forward to all the feedback that I can get on this project, as it is my first real creation that will be available for a lot of people. It’ll be built using PHP and Javascript, along with of course html, css, xml and all the other things that a blog software requires. Right now everything is still in the beginning stages of functionality. Parts of it work correctly, parts of it don’t work at all, and parts of it, well I’m having to do a lot of reading and learning to be able to create the code necessary to run it. I’ll keep working on “rocking the net” and we’ll see what comes of it.

Another thing project I’ll be working on for all you programmers out there will be tutorials. As you may have already noticed I did put up two HTML tutorials called The Basics of HTML part I and The Basics of HTML part II. They are the simplest of simple tutorials, but I had never written a tutorial before so I did those to kinda get a feel for it. I’ll eventually have tutorials in html, css, php, javascript(when I get good enough to write tutorials), java (applet related), and mysql. During the time that is required to create these tutorials I’ll start my learning of the rest of the languages available out there, like JSP, asp.net, perl, etc. so that I can offer good tutorials for them. Another tutorial I’ll be creating which is going to be the only language not dealing with web design and in fact, as far as I know, you can’t make any money with lol, will be mIRC scripting. I used to be a scripting genius when it came to mIRC. This was of course several years ago, but I think that with just a little refreshment I should remember most of what I knew. I can then offer tutorials and addons for your mIRC clients.

Just FYI I am a total believer in open source, so anything that I create you will be free to change it or modify it in anyway. Heck, that’s how I learned a lot of the stuff I know now is from modifying existing code. Anyway, once again I apologize in the lack of attention for the past 10 days, just been playing with php and javascript so much that I couldn’t find the time to update. Thanks for reading.

Yep, they sure made a boo boo. DreamHost ended up over charging all of it’s customers by a grand total of $7.5 million USD, personally I was billed $152.90. Here’s how it all went down on my end.

I wake up at 5 am this morning to get ready for P.T. and after I grab a bowl of cereal I sit down to check my email. Got 2 new messages, one of them being from DreamHost. I check the other one first, just a subscription to a blog. Figure I’ll read it later when I’m not still partially asleep. I click on the email from DreamHost, and it’s another billing receipt. I had just gotten one a few days prior for this billing cycle. I look down to the bottom of the email and it shows charges for every month of 2008. Now, I only pay a grand total of about $14 per month for hosting/unique IP, but multiply that times 12 and it adds up pretty quick. Suddenly $152.90 is coming out of my bank account. Well, that sucks, luckily for me today just happened to be pay day.

First thing I did was check my bank account to make sure this was really happening. Sure enough, the charge went through my debit card and a big ol’ -$152.90 showed up right above my pay check deposit. Somewhat upset, I clicked back to my email and sent them a reply. I couldn’t even remember what I typed until I got home, because I was still quite sleepy when I wrote it. Here was the email I sent to them in reply to the billing receipt:

What is this???? I’ve always paid on a month to month basis and suddenly
your charging me $152+ ? I just received an email receipt yesterday for the
payment for this month, so what is all this for? Please explain because
you charged me more money than I have. I do not wish to pay for a full year
in advance, not yet anyway. Please get back to me as soon as possible.

Shortly after I received an auto reply email saying that they would respond to me within 24 hours. So I went to work, hoping that things would work out during the day. When I came home that afternoon and checked my mail, I had a new message from DreamHost. Here is what it said, and btw, only DreamHost would send an email like this. I expect any other company would send a message saying they would investigate the matter further and respond within 4-6 days or something:

Hi Dustin!

Ack. Through a COMPLETE bumbling on our part, we’ve accidentally attempted
to charge you for the ENTIRE year of 2008 (and probably 2009!) ALREADY
(it was all due to a fat finger)!

I’m really really realllly embarassed about this, but you have nothing
to worry about. Please ignore any confusing billing messages you may have
received recently; I’ve already removed all those bum future charges on
your account and already refunded the $152.9 charge on your
credit card.

You should get the money back on almost immediately, within a day or
two max, and there’s no need to contact your credit card company or bank
for the refund.

Again, I feel terrible about this whole thing.. there will be a blog post
soon at blog.dreamhost.com fully explaining how this bug was even allowed
to happen..

Thank you very very much for your patience with this.. we PROMISE
this won’t happen again. There’s no need to reply to this message unless
of course you have any other questions at all!

Sorry again,
Josh!

I actually laughed to myself when I read this. Naturally, I went to the blog to see what they had to say there. You can read that here: DreamHost Blog. By the time I checked out the blog there was already over 300 replies to it. It’s amazing how such a simply mistake can balloon into such a big one. I wonder how many people decided to give up on DreamHost because of this? Oh well, it’s on them I guess. They’ll just have to be more careful in the future. Thanks for readin’.

I want to talk about Veganism. First of all, what is veganism? Veganism is a philosophy and lifestyle that seeks to exclude the use of animals for food, clothing, or any other purpose. If that doesn’t describe you, you’re not a Vegan. There are several reasons why people become Vegans and animal rights is one of the main ones. In this reason, Vegans and their organizations proclaim that animals have certain rights which make it unethical for humans to use them in ways that infringe on those rights.

I’m not writing this article to explain to you about Vegans and what they do. I’m writing it to express my opinions on the subject. I’ll begin by saying that when it comes down to it, I’m against veganism. Although I follow many Vegan eating habits, because I’m not doing it for the reasons that real Vegans do it for, I’m not a vegan. I simply choose to follow a Vegan diet for health and weight reasons. I’ll start off with the most broad way to express why I am against veganism.

I believe in the natural cycle of life that has been on Earth since the beginning of, well, life.

When I watch the discovery channel or read about ancient animals and bacteria going all the way back to the beginning, I can’t help but believe that creatures surviving by eating other creatures was the true intention of nature. It’s been this way literally forever. Some animals are designed to live off of plants, others evolved to live off of other animals, and that’s the way it is and always will be. Who are we to suddenly say that evolution has been wrong and that living off of the meat from other creatures is wrong. Why is it wrong? The answer to that question doesn’t exist, because it isn’t wrong. It isn’t wrong for us to survive off of other animals. And survival is what it all comes down to in the end, right? That is the nature of any life form, to survive, no matter what.

Survival is completely dependent upon nature, in my opinion. Herbivores survive by eating plants because it’s not only the most plentiful food source but they evolved multi chambered stomaches to handle it.. Carnivores survive eating other animals because they were designed to do just that. This then leads to evolution into smarter creatures. Almost any scientist that studies animals will tell you that your average carnivore is MUCH smarter than your average herbivore. They have to be, because they’re food source isn’t nearly as plentiful, and it doesn’t just sit and blow in the breeze waiting to be eaten. I feel, without a doubt, if there were never any carnivores, we wouldn’t be here today. There would be no need for animals to evolve and become smarter if they had nothing to worry about but eating grass and other plants the next day. On top of that, if there were no carnivores, the population of the rest of the animals would get out of control. It’s kind of like natures own way to keep all the species in check, so that they don’t overrun the planet.

For me to say that I don’t eat animal products or use animals for anything would be absurd. It’s part of life! We use animals to survive because we were meant to do that. I understand that there is a line which is often crossed, however, when it comes to survival, nothing is unethical. Now, I know that this is a very controversial topic, which is precisely the reason I’ve started it. I’m interested in hearing from anyone who wants to state their opinions. Comment away, though beware, if I get the feeling that you didn’t read the entire article and are not “looking before you leap” into this conversation, I’ll simply ignore your comment. =P

Gonna talk a little about CES 2008. I wasn’t able to attend so I watched the live showings that G4 had. It was two two hour episodes live with Kevin Prereira and Olivia Munn as the hosts along with a few other hosts throughout the show. They were able to cover a lot of the items being shown, but I just know it wasn’t near everything. I wish I could have actually attended. Anyway, on to some of the items I thought were awesome.

The Pioneer 9mm thin concept OLED plasma TV. This thing uses pretty insane technology. You can view it from all angles and instead of projecting light like a normal tv, it uses electricity which causes the oleds to produce their own light. One of the benefits of this technology is the amount of light that it produces. A normal TV projects light to display the image, making even the really dark scenes in movies light up the room with light. With OLEDs, electricity causes the OLEDs to create their own light, so those really dark scenes from your favorite horror flicks really look dark. Excellent concept in my opinion and once they begin to sell them and the price goes down some, I’m pretty sure I’ll have one.

On a side note, AOTS just came on G4 and because Kevin and Olivia are still in Vegas for CES, its being hosted by Adam Sessler and Morgan Web. Different, but cool.

The Panasonic 150″ Plasma TV is HUGE. At first I was like, wow, awesome. I mean cmon, you set that thing up in your house and you might as well be at the movie theater right? Well, in retrospect it’s like, too big. I mean, unless your seriously rich enough to have walls big enough for this thing you might as well forget it. Especially if you have young children in the house. The shear size of this thing is sure to jump the price up to a small fortune, so you definitely don’t want it falling off the wall. :p

Casio’s EXILIM Pro EX-F1. This camera is quite insane. It can shoot 60 shots per second and record videos at 1,200 fps. I can’t see ever using a camera with these sorts of crazy features, although it would be fun every once in a while.

Alienware Curved Monitor. With a screen resolution of 2880×900, this monitor is described as being other worldly. It’s over three feet long and with it being curved like it is I would imagine that it sinks you into your game more than ever.

There’s just a few of the items that were displayed at CES 2008. I would be interested in hearing what you guys thought of it and what was your favorite tech gadget that’s on its way. If you want to read more about CES 2008 you can check out G4TV.com and also Gizmodo.com. That’s it thanks for reading.

Here is this email:

Then the fake paypal sent me an email basically saying the exact same thing, but that if I sent the $200.00 within 12-24 hrs that they would credit $1000.00 to my account. yeaaahh…

Just keeping you all updated on email scams as I get them. I never thought I would say this but it is actually kinda nice getting these emails. It’s totally free content! Heheh..anyway, just want to stress safety on these. I might joke around about them here and there, but they are no joke. These scam artists are out there to take advantage of all of us, so be careful. Thanks for reading.

Trying to come up with both unique and interesting content for your blog may seem difficult to do. I know that I’ve spent time feeling like I was going insane trying to think of something worth writing about. I believe I’ve reached a point, though that I am comfortable with, and that I can gladly say will allow me to write about anything. In fact, if you really think about it for a minute, it isn’t that difficult to come up with topics for pretty much anything. Expanding on those topics is the difficult part.

The first thing you should do is create a list of topics. Use anything as an example to create this list. Start writing down questions and statements or facts about the thing you want to write about. Here’s an example:

Scotch Tape Dispensers:

1. What would the world be like without tape dispensers?

2. Different types of tape dispensers.

3. Tape dispenser or waste of time?

4. How tape dispensers are made.

5. How to re-use tape dispensers.

6. Custom tape dispensers.

7. etc..

8. etc..

That’s only a few topics that you could choose to write about tape dispensers. Such a simple device but you can always find something to write about it. This can be done with pretty much anything you can think of. Coming up with tons of topics on different items isn’t all there is to it though. You need to have at least decent writing skills. You need to have the ability to keep your readers reading. Take it from me, I have literally almost failed, but just passed, every English/Writing class I’ve ever taken, but I’ve realized that if I want to keep my readers attention that I’ll have to work on that area. As you’ve probably already noticed I am not anywhere near as good as most successful blog writers out there, but I can definitely say that since starting this site, I have improved a lot.

So here is a little homework purely for your learning experience. Pick out 5 things either at random or something that interests you. You can use search engines to look up interesting items. Come up with 10 topics per item that you could write about, and write an article on one of them for each of the 5 items. After writing each article make sure you spell check, proof read, revise and update. When you finish you’ll have a nice chunk of information that should be quite valuable to anyone interested in reading it, and you can save it to your hard drive for the occasion that a topic comes up on what you wrote on the associated content site, or simply publish it on your own blog. You should start to get the hang of this after those 5 articles, then you can continue by writing more and more all the time. Just remember, don’t write a dull article that won’t keep anybody’s attention. Make your sentences are interesting and make sure they’re coming from you and they represent how you feel. There’s nothing worse than writing something when it doesn’t represent your feelings.

Before I end this, the reason why I didn’t actually put any “tutorials” on writing styles and techniques is that I’m not that good at it myself. I still find my own stuff boring and dull sometimes just because I don’t have the experience or the vocabulary that is needed to really liven up your writing style. If you have trouble making things work out and your writings are out of order or things just don’t seem to make sense, you can always search for some writing classes or tutorials and you should find plenty of helpful websites out there. Well good luck with your blogs and thanks for reading.

I want to discuss some of the benefits of creating valuable content to post on your blog or website. First of all, your visitors will be much more interested in what you have to post, especially if it has value to them. If you create content with real value that has the potential to actually help these people or affect their lives in anyway, you’ll soon find out that your articles and posts will fall under the “once you start reading you can’t stop” category. I’ll tell you from experience that this sort of worth can’t be found just anywhere, and your information will be very influential to your readers. They will in turn continue to visit your site, tell others about it, post links to it, and affect the overall traffic that you receive. Here are some other benefits. This is a list created by myself and expresses my opinions explicitly.

Building traffic is a very important, if not the most important step in having a successful web site. It doesn’t matter if you are running a blog, an ecommerce site or whatever, traffic is key. The best way to build lots of traffic is to combine two powers. Your ability to market your site on top of your ability to keep your visitors at your site. You can show your blog to everyone in the world, get a huge spike in traffic for an hour or two, and go right back down to nothing because the content you create is totally worthless. You need to be able to write great content that people will actually be interested in so that when you do market your site by submitting to search engines, posting on other blogs, joining carnivals and so on, the visitors you get will stay for a while and continue to return, not to mention telling their friends about your site. A perfect example of this would be StevePavlina.com. I remember when I first started reading his articles I caught myself telling people I knew about his posts and his site in general. Trust me it works.

Feedback can also be a very important aspect to a successful site. You’re giving your readers all this content to think about, why not give them a way to respond? You can get great feedback from intelligent posters who are willing to share their own opinions and experiences to compare with yours. Obviously all the feedback you receive isn’t going to be positive, but that’s why you have control of the comments right? Actually, depending on the topic and the nature of the comment, even keeping negative comments might not be a bad idea. Who knows, it might help you look at something from a whole knew perspective. Feedback also allows for you to be social with your readers. This is a good thing because it lets your readers know that you’re not just a robot writing random things. Once you become social with your visitors they feel a stronger connection with both you and your site. Socializing is one of the best ways to increase traffic as well.

Helping others is great motivation for building your blog or website. Believe it or not this is a benefit of great content. By developing articles and posts with content that has great value you can help other people who read about your experiences and opinions. By helping others improve their lives you help yourself because it gives you a sense of achievement. All of this comes back to gaining you more traffic to your site.
These are just a few examples of what there is to gain from creating unique, quality content that people will find both interesting and helpful. I will continue to update this article as things come to me, so keep checking back.
